Are you concerned about your child’s hair loss? Several factors can be involved. At Hair Health Center, we specialize in hair health and hair loss. You can count on our experts to recommend the most effective and appropriate care for your child.
We are there for you
During childhood and teenage years, hair loss can become a source of great concern and lead to a loss of confidence, embarrassment and even anxiety. Fortunately, there are several solutions. The sooner you consult, the sooner our certified trichologists will be able to identify the cause and allow your child to preserve and/or regain a healthy hair. In most cases, hair loss is temporary, but sometimes it can be permanent. We will analyze the problem and make recommendations based on the cause of the hair loss and your child’s health.
Common causes for hair loss (children and teenagers)
Treatments and chemotherapy
As with adults, hair loss is a common side effect of chemotherapy. Hair loss is usually temporary and can be concealed by wearing wigs , chemo caps and hats. As soon as the disease is announced and throughout the treatments, we are at your side. We go at your child’s pace, without any pressure. Consultations take place in private and in complete privacy in our office in Rosemère, on the North Shore. We have a large selection of hair wigs and we are associated with the Angel Hair for Kids program.
Alopecia areata
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss in localized patches. Immune system cells attack the hair follicles, causing them to fall out. Hereditary factors may be involved, but with children and teenagers, the cause may also be emotional or psychological. Peladic hair loss evolves in flare-ups. In most cases, the hair grows back. However, a recurrence can occur. At the Hair Health Center, we offer specific treatments for alopecia to promote hair growth. In addition, we are able to guide you in the use of products at home, the frequency of hair care and much more.
Telogen effluvium
Telogen effluvium is a reactionary phenomenon that results in temporary hair loss or thinning of the hair. It can be caused by various factors: stress, shock, an accident, a traumatic event, a severe fever, an infection, etc. Our hair health experts will suggest effective solutions to telogen effluvium.
Ringworm
Ringworm is a contagious disease that mainly affects children between the ages of two and ten. It is caused by a fungus that invades the hair and scalp. Ringworm causes itching and can also lead to localized hair loss.
Traction alopecia
Making ponytails, braids and tight hairstyles, as well as wearing extensions, can cause hair loss in certain areas of the head. This is called traction alopecia. By modifying one’s hairstyle, it is generally possible to remedy the problem.
Trichotillomania
Trichotillomania is a compulsive disorder. The child or teenager pulls out his or her hair in reaction to various causes, such as stress, boredom or anxiety. This action can lead to inflammation of the scalp. Appropriate hair care is necessary.
Nutritional deficiencies
Hair loss during the teenage years or during childhood can also be caused by a deficiency in vitamins (vitamin D, B, biotin) or nutrients (zinc). A naturopathic consultation will allow your child to obtain a personalized nutritional plan. Adopting healthy eating habits is essential to maintain an optimal overall health.
